New Covent Garden Market has been honoured as the UK's Best Wholesale Market at the recent Great British Market Awards held in Birmingham.
The award, bestowed by the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA), recognises New Covent Garden Market for its significant history, dedication to supporting independent businesses, and commitment to environmental best practices.
Gary Marshall, Chairman of the Covent Garden Tenants Association (CGTA), expressed his delight at the recognition, stating, “This is fantastic recognition for everyone at our market in what is a particularly momentous year. CGTA has been celebrating its 100th anniversary and we’ll also be holding a dinner/dance in November to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the relocation of our great market from Covent Garden to Nine Elms.”
In addition, Borough Market was awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award as the favourite food market, a decision influenced by over 40,000 online votes in the competition.
NABMA officials praised Borough Market for being a unique food & drink and shopping destination, offering a vibrant and eclectic mix of artisanal and rare finds.
They noted, “The market is part of the history of its town and as a new town vision is being debated it is clearly regarded as part of its future. The market has respected leadership, is not frightened of change and continually seeks to evolve and provide exciting business and start-up opportunities.”
