Revolutionising Apple Storage: UK Farm Harnesses AI for Greener Future

In a ground-breaking move that signals a shift towards more sustainable agricultural practices, AC Hulme & Sons, a pioneering farm based in Canterbury, UK, is at the forefront of integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and innovative technology to revolutionize the way apples are stored, significantly reducing the energy consumption and environmental impact of this process.

This initiative, part of the first round of the Kent and Medway Business Sustainability Challenge, aims to set new standards in production, packaging, and product development within the horticultural and food supply sectors.

The project, a collaborative effort involving five academic and industry partners, focuses on the ‘Gala’ apple variety, exploring energy-efficient storage solutions across four different units. Central to this initiative is the partnership with GridDuck, a London-based energy technology firm, and Stemy Energy, specialists in AI, who are employing remote sensors and advanced AI algorithms to optimize storage conditions. This not only promises to cut down on energy usage but also ensures that the quality of the stored apples remains uncompromised.

British Apples and Pears Ltd (BAPL) is also playing a crucial role by conducting comprehensive surveys to understand current energy reduction strategies among apple growers. The insights gained from these surveys are expected to guide further research and innovation in the sector.

This initiative comes at a critical time when the agricultural sector is grappling with the dual challenges of rising energy costs and the urgent need for sustainability. Previous efforts, such as the grant awarded to JIB Cannon and Son for cold storage upgrades funded by Growing Kent & Medway, have already demonstrated the potential for significant energy savings, highlighting the effectiveness of integrating technology and sustainability.

The use of AI in agriculture, particularly in the storage of produce, represents a significant leap forward in the quest for sustainability. By leveraging AI to monitor and adjust storage conditions in real time, farms can achieve unprecedented levels of energy efficiency, reducing their carbon footprint and operational costs.
