Steve Reed Appointed as Defra Secretary of State

Steve Reed has been appointed as the new Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Having served as the Shadow Defra Secretary since September 2023, Reed has represented Croydon North as its MP since 2010. In May, Reed made an appearance at the Chelsea Flower Show, accompanied by Alistair Griffiths, the Royal Horticultural Society's Head of Science.

Reed expressed his enthusiasm for his new role, stating: "It is the privilege of my life to lead this department and serve our great country. The work starts now."

The Horticultural Trades Association (HTA) has outlined several key priorities they wish Reed to address. These include "maximising the value of green spaces and urban greening, having a world-class plant health regime, the importance of a specific plant health agreement or SPS (Sanitary and Phytosanitary) agreement with the EU and the support required for the sustainable transition to peat-free among the key asks.”

In other cabinet appointments, Angela Rayner has taken on the roles of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Housing and Levelling Up. Rachel Reeves is the new Chancellor, Yvette Cooper serves as Home Secretary, and David Lammy is the Foreign Secretary.

Jonathan Reynolds has been appointed as Business Secretary, with Ed Miliband taking on the role of Energy Secretary. Bridget Phillipson has been named Education Secretary, Wes Streeting is now Health Secretary, and Peter Kyle has been appointed Science Secretary.

Louise Haigh has taken over the transport portfolio, while Liz Kendall becomes the new Secretary of State for Work and Pensions. Lisa Nandy has been appointed as Culture Secretary.
