Turnover surges for Waitrose fruit supplier

Turnover has surged at a Worcestershire-headquartered fruit supplier which has a long-established partnership with Waitrose.

Primafruit has reported a turnover of £184m for the year to 30 April 2021, up from £159.9m in 2020.

Pre-tax profits climbed from £4.2m to £5m over the same period.

The company has been supplying Waitrose & Partners since 2008. In 2015 a long-term contract was created designed to strengthen the relationship.

A statement signed off by the board said: The events of the last year can be described as nothing less than extraordinary.

"The response of our workforce to the challenges both of Covid-19 and of Brexit has been exemplary.

"The early months of coronavirus presented exceptional circumstances, with high volatility in supply and demand.

"By working closely with our growers and customers, our company met this demand and show exceptional resilience to ensure we continued to help feed the nation."

Primafruit was acquired by Fresca Group Ltd – a privately-owned holding company with interests across the UK fresh produce sector – in 2005. However, the business continues to operate independently.
