ADOPT Grants Aim To Turn Farm Innovation Into Action

New funding opportunities are being highlighted to help farmers move from ideas to implementation, with ADOPT grants designed to support innovation at farm level and overcome common barriers to progress.

The initiative, part of the UK’s wider Farming Innovation Programme, is aimed at farmers who may have strong concepts but lack the “time, headspace or support” to bring them to life.

ADOPT (Accelerating Development of Practices and Technologies) funding focuses on enabling farmer-led, on-farm trials and experiments, allowing businesses to test and demonstrate practical solutions to real-world challenges.

The scheme offers a two-stage approach, including smaller support grants to help applicants develop proposals, alongside larger funding pots for collaborative projects. This structure is intended to make the process more accessible, particularly for those less familiar with innovation funding systems.

Backed by Defra and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK, the programme is part of a broader push to improve productivity, sustainability and resilience across the UK farming sector.

Recent funding rounds have seen millions of pounds made available for on-farm trials, reinforcing the Government’s focus on accelerating the adoption of new technologies and practices within agriculture.

Industry voices have emphasised that schemes such as ADOPT play a critical role in bridging the gap between theory and practice—helping farmers translate innovative thinking into tangible, on-farm outcomes.

The renewed focus on innovation funding comes at a time when the sector is under increasing pressure to improve efficiency, adapt to environmental demands and strengthen long-term business resilience.
