Asda has announced plans for a major expansion of its convenience store network, with a target to open 300 new Asda Express stores across the UK by the end of 2026.

The move is expected to create around 10,000 new jobs and strengthen Asda’s position in the rapidly growing convenience sector.
The supermarket chain significantly boosted its convenience footprint last year with the acquisition of 356 forecourt sites from EG Group, where existing Spar stores were rebranded as Asda Express. This deal took Asda’s Express portfolio from just two locations to 478, with further plans to increase that number to 778 over the next two years.
Asda first entered the convenience market with the launch of its standalone Express stores in Sutton Coldfield and Tottenham Hale in November 2022. Following the positive reception of these stores, the company is now pushing ahead with its expansion strategy to offer more customers quick and easy access to its products.
The retailer is also integrating well-known food franchises into its larger supermarkets, including Greggs, Subway and Burger King. Drive-thru options are being introduced too, as part of Asda’s broader ambition to diversify its retail offering and appeal to modern consumer habits.
Mohsin Issa, co-owner of Asda, said: “Asda’s significant investment in building a nationwide chain of convenience stores is a key component of our long-term strategy to become the number two grocery retailer in the UK. Our Express stores bring Asda’s great value in fuel and groceries to more communities throughout the UK.”
Andy Perry, Managing Director of Asda Express, added: “Asda’s expansion into the convenience market is one of the most exciting developments in UK grocery retail in decades. We are giving customers what they’ve long asked us for – a locally accessible Asda store within easy reach of where they live or work.”
With a strong pipeline of new locations and an aggressive growth plan, Asda is positioning itself to be a major player in the convenience retail space, bringing its value-led proposition to neighbourhoods up and down the country.
