Birds Eye owner Nomad Foods has announced a £2.2 million investment in a new potato waffle production line at its Lowestoft manufacturing facility, boosting capacity for one of the UK's best-known potato products.

The investment forms part of the company's wider long-term productivity programme, launched last year to improve efficiency, competitiveness and scale across its manufacturing network.

According to Nomad Foods, the new production line will increase annual potato waffle capacity at the site to approximately 18,250 tonnes, equivalent to nearly 45 million potato waffles each year. The company said the new line has been designed to enhance the supply of a product that remains a staple in many British households.

The Lowestoft investment follows a previous £12 million investment in chicken processing at the facility and comes as plans continue to progress for an on-site wind turbine. The turbine is intended to help secure long-term renewable energy costs alongside the green electricity already used at the site.

Nomad Foods said the latest investment demonstrates its continued commitment to UK food manufacturing and strengthening supply chain resilience at a time when food systems around the world are facing increasing pressure.

Eduardo Bachiega, Chief Supply Officer at Nomad Foods, said the investment reflects the company's long-term commitment to UK food production.

He said increasing production capacity would help meet consumer demand for household favourites such as potato waffles, which are already manufactured around the clock at the Lowestoft facility. He added that the company continues to invest in its operations to ensure frozen food categories including fish, vegetables, chicken and potatoes remain an accessible choice for families across the UK and Europe.

The Lowestoft factory, which began operations in 1949, occupies more than 25 acres and is the largest private-sector employer in the area. The site produces a range of Birds Eye products including potato waffles, peas, chicken dippers and coated fish. Around 15 per cent of production is exported to other Nomad Foods markets across Europe to meet growing consumer demand.
