Cabbage is being given a fresh moment in the spotlight as Veg Power looks to encourage more people across the UK to embrace seasonal vegetables.

According to HortWeek, the not-for-profit organisation has announced a new push under the banner “The cabbage renaissance starts now”, as part of its wider mission to get the UK eating more vegetables, fruit and beans.

The move comes as Veg Power continues to promote the benefits of seasonal eating, arguing that domestically produced, in-season vegetables are generally fresher, tastier and more environmentally friendly, while also supporting UK farming and rural communities.

Cabbage is listed among the vegetables currently in season by Veg Power, alongside crops including beetroot, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, broad beans, courgettes, peas, spinach and spring onions.

Veg Power’s #SeasonalVeg campaign is led by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall and supported by a wide network of chefs, nutritionists, food writers and social media ambassadors. The organisation says the campaign has reached more than 25 million people on social media since its launch.

The renewed focus on cabbage taps into a broader push to help shoppers rediscover British seasonal produce at a time when value, nutrition and sustainability remain high on the public agenda.

For the fresh produce industry, the campaign offers a timely opportunity to put one of the UK’s most familiar, affordable and versatile vegetables back in front of consumers.

While cabbage has often been seen as a traditional staple rather than a fashionable ingredient, Veg Power’s latest campaign suggests its reputation may be due for a refresh. From slaws and stir-fries to roasting, fermenting and hearty family meals, the humble cabbage is being repositioned as a practical, nutritious and seasonal choice for modern shoppers.
