Global shipping and logistics group CMA CGM has announced the acquisition of Freightliner UK, one of the country’s leading rail and road freight operators, in a move designed to strengthen its intermodal logistics capabilities across the UK.

Under the agreement, Freightliner’s UK rail business and inland terminals will become part of the CMA CGM Group but continue to operate as a standalone entity. The company’s heavy haul divisions in Poland and Germany are not included in the transaction.
Strengthening Intermodal Connectivity
The acquisition forms part of CMA CGM’s wider strategy to expand its inland logistics operations and improve integration between sea, rail and road transport. The group said the move will enhance connectivity between major ports and inland distribution hubs, supporting greater efficiency in freight movements across the country.
The UK is regarded by CMA CGM as a key market within its global network. By combining Freightliner’s established rail infrastructure with its own maritime and logistics expertise, the group aims to improve service reliability and offer more sustainable supply chain solutions.
Focus on Sustainable Transport
The deal aligns with CMA CGM’s ongoing efforts to decarbonise its operations. Rail freight is recognised as one of the most energy-efficient modes of inland transport, and increasing the use of rail over road is expected to reduce the group’s overall carbon footprint in the UK.
Operational Continuity
CMA CGM currently employs around 7,200 people in the UK and, in 2024, handled approximately 802,000 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) to and from the country. Between January and July 2025, its inland logistics arm transported around 200,000 TEUs by rail and road.
Freightliner’s existing leadership and operational teams will remain in place following the acquisition to ensure business continuity and maintain customer relationships.
Implementation Timeline
The transaction is expected to be completed in early 2026. Once finalised, it will further consolidate CMA CGM’s position as a major logistics provider in the UK, expanding its role in intermodal transport and supporting the transition to lower-carbon freight solutions.
