The roll-out of the sustainable farming standard will take place throughout next year in partnership with British growers and farmers, according to a press release from the retailer.

The widely recognised environmental certification includes practices that promote soil health, biodiversity and water stewardship, and will work alongside existing reassurance schemes such as Red Tractor.

Co-op said the move forms part of company’s ongoing strategy to strengthen resilience in its produce supply chain.

Growers and producers involved in Co-op’s produce grower group, known as The Fresh Produce Forum, were consulted and involved in the decision to introduce LEAF.

The network, which was set up to foster collaboration and open dialogue on the real challenges facing producers, will be instrumental throughout the process of the standard being rolled out.

Laser Focused on Hitting Targets

Announcing the decision to champion home-grown produce, Olivia Theaker, Co-op’s Agriculture Manager said supporting British agriculture has never been more important.

"We work with passionate farmers and growers who are going above and beyond in protecting soil health, biodiversity and water resources, and our move to the LEAF marque has been shaped with them as we continue to remain laser focused in our sustainability goals and efforts,” emphasised Theaker.

LEAF shared its delight in Co-op’s decision to introduce the certification.

“This is a powerful demonstration of the strength of partnerships in driving real, measurable progress towards more climate-positive, nature-friendly farming,” explained Clare Mike, Director of LEAF Marque and International Development.

“Through LEAF Marque certification, Co-op growers are embedding the principles of Integrated Farm Management through practices that promote soil health, biodiversity and water stewardship, while helping their customers make trusted, sustainable food choices. Together, we’re strengthening the connection between how our food is produced and the positive impact it can have on our environment.”

Co-op said it spends over £700 million per year with British farmers and agriculture suppliers.

This support includes continually sourcing British produce, such as its all year-around commitment to procuring 100% British Potatoes and carrots.

LEAF Marque is a recognised standard for sustainable farming.

The environmental certification focuses on integrated farm management practices which promote soil health, biodiversity, and the protection of water resources.
