Company Shop Middleton, part of the UK’s leading redistributor of surplus food and household products Company Shop Group, is celebrating a decade of environmental and social impact by cutting food waste while serving the local community.

Since 2015, the Manchester-based store alone has prevented 30,000 tonnes of surplus from becoming waste, delivered the equivalent of 69.3 million meals, saved members over £63 million, and avoided an estimated 78,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions.
One of 13 stores across England and Scotland run by Company Shop Group, the Middleton outlet has helped tens of thousands of local families stretch their budgets, and prevented good food from going to waste.
In the process, the store has become part of the fabric of its local town of Middleton, and remains committed to supporting households as costs continue to increase, Company Shop Group said in a press release.
“Middleton has been at the heart of our community for ten years, and this anniversary is as much a celebration of our members as it is our store,” explained Akbar Yaqub, Store Manager at Company Shop Middleton.
“Their support over the years has helped us deliver real social and environmental impact, saving families money while preventing great products from going to waste.”
A Model Built For Ethical Success

Working with over 800 retailers, manufacturers and brands, Company Shop Group redistributes surplus stock and makes it accessible to its store members at discounted prices, ensuring good food feeds people instead of being wasted.
With over a third of food produced globally going to waste each year, and 10.7 million tonnes a year wasted in the UK alone, the organisation said its redistribution model shows how commercial surplus redistribution can deliver both environmental impact and value back into the supply chain.
Safe to consume, the surplus products are often the result of mislabelling, seasonal changes or overproduction.
“Company Shop Middleton’s decade of impact reflects our vision to stop surplus from going to waste and reduce the environmental impact of food loss across the supply chain,” commented Gemma Edlin, Head of Retail at Company Shop Group.
“Stores like Middleton play a vital role in that mission, supporting their local communities while helping our industry partners manage surplus sustainably.”
Company Shop Group describes its approach as pioneering by stopping unnecessary waste, helping businesses to recover value from surplus stock, and ensuring good food and essential products reach the households and communities that need them.
Membership at Company Shop is free and open to those working in the FMCG supply chain, NHS, emergency services, social care, prison services, the British Armed Forces, and employees and volunteers of registered charities. Those in receipt of means-tested benefits can also apply.
