Blue Yonder, a US based supply chain software company, works with companies across the world. The organisation experienced a ransomware attack over the weekend, which has disrupted operations for many of its clients, including major UK grocery chains.
The company's solutions utilise artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms to assist retailers in modelling demand and optimising inventory.
Serving over 3,000 customers, Blue Yonder's clientele includes prominent UK retailers such as Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, ASDA, Starbucks, and other significant firms like DHL, Procter & Gamble, and Nestlé.
A number of UK based grocery retailers are also said to have been impacted by the incident, with The Grocer reporting that both Morrisons and Sainsbury’s had suffered disruptions.
According to the company's incident updates, disruptions to its managed services hosted environment began on 21 November 2024, which were determined to be the result of a ransomware incident. Blue Yonder reported that its Azure public cloud environment remained unaffected, with no suspicious activity observed.
On 24 November, Blue Yonder provided an update stating that its teams were "working around the clock" to respond to the incident and were making progress.
A spokesperson for Morrisons stated: “We have reverted to a backup process but the outage has caused the smooth flow of goods to our stores to be impacted.” While Sainsbury’s said it had “contingency processes in place” to deal with the Blue Yonder outage.
Morrisons reported that the incident has affected its warehouse management systems for fresh and produce items, but ambient and frozen goods are unaffected. The company has been operating on backup systems to continue serving customers.
