Uganda has reinstated direct air links with the United Kingdom for the first time in nearly a decade, offering a major boost to the country’s fresh produce sector.

The new route, launched in May 2025, provides dedicated cargo capacity to transport a range of fresh produce, including bananas, avocados, chillies, fine beans and sweet potatoes, directly to the UK. The development is expected to improve transit times, reduce spoilage, and extend the shelf life of perishable goods arriving on British shelves.
Industry insiders believe the direct connection will make Uganda more competitive in European markets by offering quicker and more reliable logistics for its high-value agricultural exports. The move is particularly significant given the global emphasis on reducing carbon footprints and streamlining fresh produce supply chains.
This marks the first direct Uganda-UK flight service since 2015 and signals a renewed focus on strengthening trade and investment ties. The fresh produce industry in Uganda stands to gain considerably, with the route providing a dependable outlet for growers and exporters looking to expand into or scale up within the UK market.
The return of direct flights is also being hailed as a critical step in reinforcing the country’s economic resilience. It supports Uganda’s broader ambitions to position itself as a key player in international agricultural trade, while offering UK buyers a more diverse and consistent supply of fresh produce.
