DP World Unveils Carbon Inset Trial to Cut Supply Chain Emissions

DP World has launched a groundbreaking carbon reduction initiative at its UK logistics hubs, London Gateway and Southampton, aiming to assist cargo importers in reducing their emissions.

The Carbon Inset Programme, set to commence on 1 January 2025, will offer importers 50kg CO₂e of carbon credits for every loaded import container processed through DP World’s UK terminals during an initial six-month trial.

The credits, independently certified and issued quarterly, will enable participating companies to demonstrate efforts to reduce Scope 3 emissions—indirect emissions occurring along their supply chains. Unlike conventional carbon offset credits, which mitigate emissions through external activities like tree planting, inset credits directly reflect reductions achieved within a company’s supply chain.

DP World’s inset credits are generated through its subsidiary, Unifeeder, which employs progressively lower-carbon fuels in its Northern European shipping network. These credits are verified and pooled, providing registered importers with transparent and independently certified carbon credits. This innovative approach is designed to offer businesses a practical and measurable way to address Scope 3 emissions while showcasing their commitment to sustainability.

“At DP World we are constantly exploring ways to reduce carbon emissions across our customers’ supply chains. Insetting carbon emissions is a transparent, direct and pragmatic approach with immediate measurable impact for our customers,” explained John Trenchard, Vice President – Commercial & Supply Chain, DP World in the UK. “By providing easy access to an independently certified inset programme, we aim to create better awareness and encourage the adoption of more sustainable practices. By participating in the trial, a world first, import cargo owners can actively contribute to global decarbonisation efforts while aligning with their own sustainability goals.”

The initiative builds on the success of DP World’s Modal Shift Programme, which reduced partners’ emissions by over 17,000 tonnes in its first year, earning the company the ‘Transport and Mobility Project of the Year’ accolade at the edie Net Zero awards in November.

The potential impact of the Carbon Inset Programme is substantial. If 50% of import volume participates in the trial, it could replace over 11,000 tonnes of traditional fossil fuels with lower-carbon marine fuels, cutting approximately 10,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

Christian Hoepfner, Director Group Decarbonisation at Unifeeder Group, expressed support for the initiative: “At Unifeeder, we are committed to using alternative fuels to decarbonise our logistics solutions. We are supporting DP World in the UK in their innovative Carbon Inset Programme by contributing verified GHG reductions generated on our vessels operating in Europe.”

Businesses interested in joining the trial are encouraged to register before 31 December 2024 to receive complimentary carbon inset credits. Registration is straightforward, and companies can sign up via a provided link or contact DP World directly at energytransition.uk@dpworld.com for further information.
