Dutch horticulturists have reacted with dismay following critical comments made by US President Donald Trump about the quality of ornamental plants imported from the Netherlands.

Speaking at a recent press conference, President Trump stated: “I’ve seen the flowers coming in from the Netherlands, and frankly, they’re not as good as what we grow here.”
His remarks have sparked a backlash from the Netherlands – the world’s largest exporter of ornamental plants – where industry leaders take immense pride in their high standards and global reputation.
Jan de Vries, Chairman of the Dutch Flower Association, responded: “We take great pride in our horticultural products, and it’s disheartening to hear such comments from President Trump.”
The unexpected slight has raised concerns over the potential impact on trade relations between the two countries, as reported by Horticulture Week, particularly given the significant value of Dutch exports to the U.S. horticultural market.
In an effort to smooth tensions and showcase the industry’s credentials, Dutch Minister of Agriculture Carola Schouten has invited President Trump to visit the Netherlands: “We believe that a visit would showcase the dedication and expertise of our growers.”
Despite the controversy, Dutch growers remain hopeful that open dialogue will preserve the strong commercial ties between the nations and reaffirm the Netherlands’ status as a global leader in ornamental horticulture.
