Editor's View: FPC Forging a Powerful New Partnership Between Industry and Government

The FPC's tireless lobbying and persistance in the face of adversity has borne fruit, and it's not just the apples and pears now flowing freely from the EU.

Import checks and fees on medium-risk produce have been mercifully delayed, giving businesses and consumers alike a much-needed reprieve.

This isn't just a win for the industry, it's a lifeline for every family struggling to put affordable, healthy food on the table in these challenging times.

FPC Chief Executive Nigel Jenney, a true champion of our food producers, has hailed this victory as a testament to the power of collaboration.

"The new government has listened," he declared, and his words echo through fields and factories across the land.

This is a government that understands the importance of backing British businesses, and it's a welcome change indeed.

But let's not get carried away!

Jenney reminds us that challenges remain, and there's still much work to be done.

The industry needs fully operational control points and an effective authorised operator status by July 2025. These are the nuts and bolts of a smooth and efficient import system, and they're essential to keeping costs down for both producers and consumers.

This is where the real beauty of the FPC's victory lies. It's not just about winning concessions, it's about forging a new partnership between industry and government.

Jenney is adamant: the industry has the solutions, and it's ready to work with the government to implement them. This is a call for continued collaboration, a plea to keep the lines of communication open and the focus on finding practical, workable solutions.

The FPC's triumph is a beacon of hope in an uncertain world. It shows that even in the face of adversity, we can achieve great things when we work together.

It's a reminder that the food on our plates isn't just a commodity, it's the lifeblood of our nation. And when we protect our food producers, we protect our future.

So let's raise a glass at this year's Fresh Awards to the FPC, to Nigel Jenney, and to everyone who has fought tirelessly for this victory.

Let's celebrate this new dawn for the UK food industry, and let's continue to work together to ensure a bright and prosperous future for all.
