The European Union has advised its 450 million citizens to maintain a 72-hour supply of essential items, such as food and water, as a precautionary measure against potential emergencies including natural disasters, pandemics, and conflicts.

This advice forms part of a wider preparedness strategy from the European Commission, which outlines 30 action points aimed at strengthening Europe's resilience in the face of increasing geopolitical tensions, cybersecurity threats, climate-related incidents, and warfare.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stressed the urgency of improved preparedness, saying, "New realities require a new level of preparedness in Europe. Our citizens, our member states, and our businesses need the right tools to act, both to prevent crises and to react swiftly when a disaster hits."

She also highlighted the practical importance of such readiness, stating, "Families living in flood zones should know what to do when the waters rise. Early warning systems can prevent regions hit by wildfires from losing precious time."

Hadja Lahbib, Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management, reinforced this collective responsibility, declaring, "Preparedness must be woven into the fabric of our societies — everyone has a role to play."

While the EU’s guidance intends to enhance overall resilience, experts caution against triggering unnecessary panic buying. Fiona Peake, a personal finance expert at Ocean Finance, noted, "While it's a good idea to be ready for potential disruptions, stockpiling food might not be the best approach for everyone." She suggested focusing on practical, non-perishable items such as tinned goods, grains, and pasta, and encouraged measured buying practices to avoid unnecessary expenditure or disruption to the market.

The EU's preparedness measures aim to ensure citizens are well-equipped to respond effectively to unforeseen crises, reflecting a coordinated, continent-wide approach to emergency management.
