The UK fresh produce sector is set to benefit from a new supply opportunity following the launch of a pilot export of apple mangoes from Kenya to the United Kingdom.

The inaugural consignment marks the first time the distinctive apple mango variety has been shipped to the UK on a trial basis, with the move designed to test market readiness and logistics while assessing long-term commercial potential.
Apple mangoes, which are known for their sweet flavour, smooth fibre-free flesh and consistent quality, are primarily grown in Kenya’s Makueni region. The variety is harvested twice annually and is already well established in regional and international markets, making it a strong candidate for UK import programmes.
The pilot shipment forms part of broader efforts to expand Kenya’s horticultural exports to the UK, offering British buyers greater choice and supply diversification at a time when retailers and wholesalers continue to seek reliable, high-quality fruit from trusted origins.
Industry stakeholders involved in the project said the trial will help demonstrate Kenya’s ability to meet UK food safety, quality and traceability standards, while also providing valuable insight into consumer demand and supply chain performance.
If successful, the pilot could pave the way for regular commercial volumes, strengthening UK sourcing options while supporting grower incomes and export growth at origin.
The development comes as the UK continues to build post-Brexit trading relationships with global fresh produce suppliers, with tropical fruit remaining a key growth category across retail, wholesale and foodservice channels.
