Lidl’s nationwide expansion shows no sign of slowing down as the discounter strengthens its position as the UK’s fastest-growing bricks and mortar retailer, according to data from Worldpanel by Numerator for the 52 weeks ended 28 December 2025.

The new store openings – ranging from Wiltshire to Yorkshire – mark a continued period of rapid growth for the German discounter which is set on securing a larger share of the UK retail market.

The new stores will bring more value, choice, and jobs to communities nationwide, as well as 640 new jobs nationwide, Lidl said in a press release.

“With this push, we’re set on winning more shoppers across the nation and claiming an even bigger share of the market,” explained Richard Taylor, Chief Real Estate Officer at Lidl GB.

“We’re starting the new year as we mean to go on, with a major investment that reinforces our commitment to delivering the best experience for customers and creating a positive impact for the communities we serve,” Taylor continued.

Store Modernisation

Alongside the 19 new stores, Lidl plans to refurbish over 70 existing UK stores from Dundee to the Isle of Wight.

The £43million investment will enhance the sites with changes including new tills and larger freezers to offer a greater range of products

As part of the modernisation, the discounter is introducing energy-saving features, such as chillers that use natural refrigerants, and smart lighting systems that reduce electricity use.

Lidl said these improvements will help lower the environmental impact and support the retailer’s journey toward Net Zero.

Since establishing in the UK in 1994, Lidl has grown its operations to over 1,000 stores and 13 distribution centres in England, Scotland, and Wales.
