Morrisons Expands Food Waste Battle with Too Good To Go in Convenience Stores

Morrisons has extended its partnership with the surplus food app Too Good To Go to include its Morrisons Daily convenience stores.

The expansion, effective from August 6, 2024, follows a successful trial in northern England, the Midlands, and Wales, where over 40,000 "Surprise Bags" were saved.

Now, customers at approximately 930 Morrisons Daily stores can purchase these Surprise Bags containing quality food nearing its sell-by date at a reduced price.

Andrew Edlin, Morrisons' Senior Sustainability Manager, highlighted the dual benefits of the initiative: “Customers and colleagues continue to tell us how much they value Too Good To Go’s Surprise Bags from Morrisons. It saves customers money while also helping us to play our part in reducing food waste and hitting our sustainability target of achieving scope 3 net-zero operational emissions.”

Sophie Trueman, Country Director at Too Good To Go UK and Ireland, expressed her excitement about the extended partnership: “Our team is absolutely thrilled to have Morrisons Daily joining the fight against food waste.

"At Too Good To Go, we believe that saving food from going to waste is a win-win-win – businesses can recover the sunk cost of would-be wasted food, consumers can get good food for less, and we’re collectively doing something great for the planet by stopping that food from ending up in landfill.”

Since the inception of their collaboration in 2019, Morrisons and Too Good To Go have expanded to nearly 500 supermarkets, saving 2.3 million Surprise Bags of food from being wasted.

This effort is significant as food waste accounts for 10% of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions worldwide. The partnership aims to combat climate change by reducing waste, thus contributing to limiting the global temperature rise to 2˚C by 2100.
