New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) has been officially named Britain’s Best Wholesale Market 2026 at the Great British Market Awards, held earlier this week in Birmingham.

The UK’s biggest horticultural wholesale hub – serving fruit, vegetables, flowers and plants to independent retailers, hospitality and foodservice customers right across London and the South East – clinched the top accolade at the National Association of British Market Authorities (NABMA) ceremony.

The award highlights NCGM’s pivotal role at the centre of the British fresh produce supply chain, recognising both its scale and its ongoing modernisation efforts as a wholesale powerhouse.

Located in Nine Elms, London, the market is home to hundreds of tenants and supplier businesses, collectively generating significant turnover and employing thousands of workers each year.

In addition to its traditional wholesale precincts, the market has developed new commercial spaces including the Food Exchange and Mission Kitchen – dynamic environments designed to support emerging food businesses and foster innovation within the wider sector.

NCGM’s management and tenant community have emphasised that the award not only acknowledges past achievements, but also underlines the market’s future vision. A major redevelopment programme is currently under way, with the goal of creating a next-generation wholesale hub that will serve London’s independent retail and catering sectors for decades to come.

Representatives from the market expressed deep pride in the recognition, noting that wholesale markets often operate behind the scenes but remain essential to the UK’s food and floral ecosystems.
