Spud Giant Greenvale Secures Science-Based Net Zero Validation

Greenvale, one of the UK’s largest growers and suppliers of fresh, processing and organic potatoes, has taken a major step forward in its sustainability journey, securing validation from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its ambitious 2045 net zero targets.

The SBTi is a collaboration between the Carbon Disclosure Project, the United Nations Global Compact, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF).

It independently assesses corporate climate targets against the latest science to ensure businesses align with global efforts to limit warming to 1.5°C. Achieving SBTi approval marks a significant milestone in Greenvale’s commitment to sustainability and climate action.

Greenvale’s near- and long-term targets have been approved, requiring the company to reduce absolute scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 58.8% by 2034.

Additionally, scope 3 emissions—covering purchased goods and services, transportation, employee commuting and more—must be reduced by 63.8% from its 2023 baseline. By 2045, the company is committed to cutting scope 1 and 2 emissions by 90% and significantly reducing scope 3 emissions per tonne of potatoes sold.
