Unsung Heroes of Horticulture Honoured in HM The King’s New Year Honours List 2025

The 2025 New Year Honours List, issued by HM The King, celebrates the exceptional contributions of individuals from communities across the UK, shining a spotlight on six remarkable figures in environmental horticulture.



Among them is industry icon Alan Titchmarsh, whose achievements lead this year’s horticultural honourees.


Alan Titchmarsh Elevated to CBE

The renowned horticulturalist, author, and broadcaster Alan Titchmarsh, MBE, has been awarded a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for his outstanding services to horticulture and charity. This honour marks a significant milestone in Titchmarsh’s illustrious career, recognising his enduring impact on the industry and his philanthropic efforts.


Academic Excellence Recognised

Professor Rosemary Collier, of the University of Warwick’s Life Sciences department, has been appointed OBE for her pioneering work in horticultural science and pest control technologies. Her contributions have helped advance research and innovation in the field.


Honours for Industry Leaders

Mark Fane, director of Crocus.co.uk and former chair of the Garden Museum board of trustees, has been awarded an MBE for his dedication to horticulture. Similarly, Susan Medway, Director and Curator of Chelsea Physic Garden, received an MBE for her contributions to horticulture and charitable endeavours.


Grassroots Impact and Social Change

Peter Hulatt has been awarded the British Empire Medal (BEM) for his services to the Camden Garden Centre Charitable Trust, a role through which he has positively impacted his local community.


Champion of British Floristry Recognised

Yorkshire flower farmer Gill Hodgson has been honoured with an MBE for her services to floristry. Hodgson is the founder of Flowers from the Farm, a network promoting British-grown, seasonal cut flowers, and The Farewell Flowers Directory, which advocates for sustainable, plastic-free funeral floral arrangements.


This year’s honourees reflect the extraordinary diversity and dedication within the horticultural sector, showcasing the profound influence of these individuals on communities, science, and sustainability.
