A new toolkit will deliver practical advice, recipes and money-saving guidance to families struggling to maintain a healthy diet as food costs continue to squeeze household budgets.

Veg Power has joined forces with leading food charities and community organisations to launch a new Healthy Food Toolkit aimed at helping families prepare affordable, nutritious meals.

Supported by The Food Foundation, Felix, the Community Fridge Network, Feeding Britain, Bread and Butter and FoodCycle, the initiative brings together a range of accessible resources designed to make healthy eating easier and more achievable.

The toolkit includes digital flyers, posters, family-friendly recipes, videos and links to practical advice covering meal planning, batch cooking and reducing food waste.

Resources will be distributed through community kitchens, food banks, food pantries and local networks, enabling organisations already working with families to provide practical support alongside food supplies.

The initiative comes as millions of people across the UK face difficulties accessing enough nutritious food. The Food Foundation's Broken Plate 2026 report found that 12 per cent of UK households were experiencing food insecurity in January 2026, equating to more than six million adults and 2.1 million children.

Fruit and vegetables are often among the first foods to disappear from shopping baskets when household finances come under pressure. Separate Food Foundation research published in 2025 found that 64 per cent of food-insecure households had reduced their fruit purchases because of money worries, while 50 per cent had cut back on vegetables.

Veg Power's new toolkit has been developed to help families overcome some of those barriers by offering realistic ways to plan meals, make ingredients go further and incorporate healthier foods into everyday dishes.

The campaign also recognises that providing food alone may not always give families the confidence or practical knowledge needed to make full use of available ingredients. Simple recipes, preparation guidance and advice on using leftovers could help community food providers increase the nutritional value of the support they offer while reducing avoidable waste.

Veg Power is a not-for-profit alliance dedicated to improving diets by making healthy and sustainable food more appealing. Its campaigns use collaboration, practical guidance and creative communications to encourage children and families to eat more vegetables, fruit and beans.

The new initiative places fresh produce firmly at the heart of the response to food insecurity, helping families turn affordable and donated ingredients into healthy meals at a time when access to nutritious food remains under intense pressure.
