Westfalia Fruit is doubling down on sustainability and efficiency with a bold expansion of its “Whole Tree” approach to avocado production and processing, reinforcing its position as a circular-agriculture leader.

Amid ongoing supply chain pressures — from climate volatility to logistical disruption and rising costs — the global avocado specialist has outlined how it is extracting more value from every part of the avocado tree and fruit grade.
The strategy sees Westfalia Fruit divert all avocado harvests into productive uses, whether that’s premium fresh fruit across multiple tiers — from “good” to organic — or into a wide array of convenience and processed products such as guacamole, smashed avocado, pulp, oil and frozen formats.

Fruit that doesn’t meet fresh market specifications is routed into high-value processing, ensuring consistent utilisation and bolstering sustainable supply.
Crucially, the company is also pushing towards a zero-waste, total crop use objective. Innovative workstreams are underway to turn by-products, including skins and stones, into commercially viable materials. These include natural pigment extracts, cosmetic ingredients, and fibre and starch components that could ultimately be used in sustainable packaging solutions.
This effort builds on more than seven years of research and development, aiming to extract valuable compounds that previously would have been destined for composting or anaerobic digestion.
By embedding this full-crop philosophy across its operations, Westfalia Fruit says it is not only reducing waste and enhancing efficiency, but also strengthening its offerings to growers, customers and consumers alike — with further projects already in the pipeline.
