Stretching for nearly a kilometre along Whitechapel Road, the market is renowned for its vibrant selection of fresh fruit and vegetables. Shoppers can find an array of exotic produce, from naga chillies and bangla kodu to green papayas and fresh herbs, reflecting the diverse communities that call the area home.

The market’s commitment to sustainability and community engagement played a key role in securing this accolade. Initiatives such as the Young Traders Market have provided a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs, while projects like ‘Know Your Onions’ have encouraged local schoolchildren to grow and sell their own fresh produce, fostering a new appreciation for healthy, locally sourced food.

Long-standing traders have welcomed the recognition. Nurzaman Choudhury, who has been trading for 13 years, said, “I’m very happy to win this award.” Hasan Darwish, a trader of 23 years, added, “Our community is very good, we get a lot of help from the management, and the traders are very friendly as well.”

Councillor Shafi Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Environment and Climate Emergency, highlighted the market’s continued success, describing it as a “hub of history, culture, and community”. He also pointed to significant investment in the market’s infrastructure, ensuring it remains a thriving destination for generations to come.

Open Monday to Saturday from 8 am to 6 pm, Whitechapel Market offers a rich variety of fresh produce, cultural goods, and a welcoming atmosphere—a winning combination that has now been recognised on a national stage.
