British-Grown Melons Thrive As Record Heat Reshapes UK Cropping
Melons have emerged as an unlikely success story from Britain’s record-breaking summer, with a Devon farmer successfully producing cantaloupes outdoors as warmer conditions encourage growers to experiment with crops traditionally associated with southern Europe.

Alvaro cantaloupe melons grown at the 300-acre Martinsfield Farm in Broadclyst have flourished during the heatwaves, according to The Telegraph.
Unlike some British melon crops cultivated under the protection of polytunnels, the Martinsfield Farm fruit was planted outside. The farm’s social media accounts show that melons were planted alongside courgettes, squashes and pumpkins in June.
The resulting cantaloupes have since been offered through local outlets including Exe Valley Farm Shop, which described the Devon-grown fruit as having “thrived in the UK heatwave”. Martinsfield Farm has also been seeking additional wholesale customers for the crop.
Farm owner Ed Rhodes told The Telegraph that the previous year had been difficult, but the prolonged heat of 2026 had created far more favourable conditions for the melons.
The success comes after the UK recorded its hottest summer since records began in 1884. Provisional Met Office figures put the country’s average mean temperature across June, July and August at 16.5°C, while temperatures reached 38.1°C at Kew Gardens in London on 13 August.
The same conditions have caused severe disruption elsewhere in British horticulture. Growers have reported heat stress, water shortages, disrupted planting and harvesting schedules, smaller crops and quality problems across several fruit and vegetable categories.
Melons, however, need sustained warmth and sunshine to ripen successfully. Britain’s relatively short and unpredictable summers have historically made outdoor commercial production difficult, but the Devon crop illustrates how changing conditions may create opportunities for carefully selected varieties and alternative cropping systems.
British farmers are already experimenting with a broader range of produce, including grapes, kiwifruit, nuts, olives and citrus fruit, as they assess which crops may become commercially viable in a warmer climate.
Professor Nicola Cannon, an expert in sustainable agriculture at the Royal Agricultural University, told The Telegraph that two consecutive hot summers did not necessarily establish a permanent trend. She pointed to the exceptionally hot summers of 1975 and 1976, which were followed by cooler conditions.
She also highlighted work at Warwick Crop Centre to future-proof UK vegetable production by developing varieties with greater resilience to heat, drought, pests and disease.
The Martinsfield Farm crop nevertheless provides a compelling glimpse of how British horticulture could evolve. While rising temperatures are placing significant pressure on many established crops, they may also enable growers to test new varieties and extend domestic production into categories that have traditionally depended heavily on imports.
For the moment, Devon-grown cantaloupes remain a niche product. But after this summer’s success, the prospect of commercially produced British melons no longer looks quite so exotic.
